JPatch Animator

Getting started

This document describes a few properties you should set when running the animator for the first time. For more information, please consult the JPatch Animator reference manuel.

The JPatch animator is work in progress. Unlike the JPatch modeler, it is in a very early stage of development. It lacks several features, some features are not very user friendly, and it maybe has got a lot of bugs. It’s a bit tedious to configure for the first time, but this document will hopefully get you started. If you have further questions, please ask them in the forum!

After starting the animator for the first time, you should set some global preferences (like working directory or some renderer specific settings):

Model directory

There is currently no concept of projects. Instead the animator expects that all model files are located in a single directory. You should set this directory in the main menu under OptionsPreferences.

If you like to use a JPatch model in an animation, simply copy it into the model directory.

Renderer options

Open the renderer options menu (it’s in the main menu under OptionsRenderer options.

Working directory

This is the directory JPatch will use for all geometry files it exports (e.g. .pov or .rib files). When invoking a renderer, JPatch will cd into this directory. As a consequence, all addinional resources the renderer may need (include files, archives, shaders) should either be in that directory too, or must be accessible by the renderer. Rendered images (.png or .tif) files will also be placed into the working directory.

Renderer specific options


Set the texture path to the directory that contains inyo textures (.bsh files). Set it to the textures directory of the JPatch distribution.


Enter the command to start POV-Ray. On linux, this can be e.g. povray or megapov. On windows, use the browse button to locate the POV-Ray executable (e.g. C:\Program Files\POV-Ray for Windows v3.6\bin\pvengine.exe).

You may also specify envorinments variables needed by POV-Ray (this should not be necessary, so leave this filed blank).

When using the official POV-Ray for Windows release, set POV-Ray version to Windows. When using a unix or cygwin version or the command line version of MegaPov, set this to Unix/Cygwin.


Enter to command to start the RIB renderer (e.g. aqsis or renderdl). On windows, use the browse button to locate the renderer executable.

You may also specify environment variables needed by the renderer.

How to render the demo animations

The JPatch 0.4 PREVIEW 1 archive contains a demo/ folder. In this folder you’ll find some models and animation files. To render these animations from the Animator, follow the instructions below:

  • The models use textures that require Mega-POV 1.1 or later to be installed. You must install POV-Ray 3.6 or later and the commandline version of Mega-POV 1.1 or later. Test if Mega-POV works properly.
  • There seems to be a bug in JPatch when selecting a directory: Please use the browse button to set the directories mentioned below!
  • In OptionsPreferences set the model directory to the demo/ folder of the JPatch distribution.
  • In OptionsRenderer options…
    • Set the Working Directory to the demo/ folder of the JPatch distribution. This is necessary because textures (.inc) files will be loaded from this directory.
    • Set Preferred Renderer to POV-Ray
    • In the POV-Ray tab, set Path to POV-Ray executable: to your megapov binary.
    • Set POV-Ray version to Unix/Cygwin
  • Open an animation file (e.g. hasta_la_vista.anim). If you’ve set the model directory to the right location, the file browser will open in the demo/ folder of the JPatch distribution. If not, JPatch will be unable to load the models used in the animation!
  • In the File menu, select Render current frame. You should see some status messages from Mega-POV during rendering and the rendered image once Mega-POV finished.
  • In the File menu, select Render animation to render the whole animation (or parts of it). The rendered images will be stored in the Working Directory as set in the Renderer Options (the demo/ folder of the JPatch distribution in this case).
