Tutorial 1 – My first patch object – The Apple

Little info This is my very first patch object I ever done, this tutor is more like notes from when I started to build my apple, and I converted it into this tutorial… I have no experience of patch modelling at all and my English can be very bad in some of the text. So if you are a beginner read on, otherwise this tutorial is not for you.

I’m not so ever responsible for what this tutorial contains describes, lot’s of information may be wrong but I hope we can fix it together anyway…

Step 1 – Making the outline spline for the apple So I start off with the outer splice that defines the rudimentary shape of an apple, that I will lathe around the Y-Axis, 8 times because it feels right now that I want that sections to form the irregulations I mention above.

This shapes is ok for me, for now… ensure the the start and end control points of the splice is aligned with Y-axis…

Step 2 – Using lathe tool to create base object Ok lets use the lathe tool to create the core form of the apple, as I mention before I do the apple in 8 segments because of the easier modifications to tweak the apple to one kind apple and not an basic shape apple. But what is that red thing in the preview !?, each patch’s backside is red to easier identify such in this case that the patch is pointing in wrong direction, continue with next step to solve this.

Step 3 – Flipping the red patches Select the point that creates the red patch as image below and use the “Flip Patches” accessed from the popup menu, do this for each red patch and then we have an “nice” looking solid patch object, a tip is to select all control points that has an red patch and then flip all patches at once to save time.

Step 4 – Forming the shape of the apple First impression is that the apple is too compact in Y-Axis, let’s first select the lower part of the apple and move it downwards to a more realistic height, I assume you know how to do this so this isn’t explained.

Ok let’s continue, next impression now is that the apple is too bold in shape, I should have an additional section in Y-Axis.

I missed this in the first spline we made before lathing the spline around Y axis , let’s insert a control point on each spline around the apple to construct a new section, this is done by selecting a point on spline an pressing tab, this select an curve segment which is colored green as picture below.

Then press INSERT key to split this segment by adding an control point at the middle, do this on the curve segment in above pictures on each spline around the apple, and the result should look like the picture below.

As you probably noticed we broke up the 4 points patches and they disappeared in the preview panel as in the picture above, now it’s time to add a spline around the apple by adding one from point to point. Now you have finished creating an additional section on the apple object, lets compute patches and see the result…

And again those inverted patched shows up, flip them as we did in earlier step to make the apple whole again. Ok, that’s done, do some rotation in preview mode so you don’t miss anyone…

Let’s look at our apple, the apple is as before to bold/rounded and I feel I want to narrow it in the bottom, end with the extra added section we can modify it better. I do this for making the apple more shapeful, moving down the whole section we just added a bit, and scaling it down some. I even scale down the end sections a bit to archive a better form. Ok it’s fine for me, the following picture show’s my apple form.

Now I want to add the irregulations for the apple form that I mention in step 1, what I mean is that the top of the apple is plane in XY axis and I want to raise and sink the control points at top to archive this natural deformation of an apple, in the picture below I tweaked the top sections of the apple to a better form that suits me.

Now if we look at the lower sections of the apple they need some modifications too, but I start with that section we added earlier, It’s in words defined as too rounded, I want to flatten out the spline at some control points, see result below, do not move the control points to much cause, keep a steady circle with some modification .

This look nice for me, and now we have the end section to modify it’s the same alter as the top we did before to not have the control points aligned in XY plane so we archive that wavely feeling at the bottom such we have at top, I also rasied the section we added a bit to make a little more conic form then a round one, I have also scaled each other spline in XY plane to make an wavely form see top view, and the result looks promising for me, no more tweaking with the form let’s continue with the apple details, as you can see I added an pigment for my apple to a nice tasty green, see the result below.

Step 5 – Adding apple details Lets hide out apple, you do that by simple selecting all the control points and under selection alternative at right panel press the button add current selection, remove the old and rename the new to apple for an example, press the newly create selection at the pane at right, and press key H to hide the selected points, same process for unhiding the apple.

I will hide the apple for creating the little branch, when the branch is done I create a selection out of it and then showing the unhiding the apple to fit the branch into place.

First off we create a outline of the branch in top view, se picture below, and then we shall extrude this along Y-Axis in several sections typical 3 or 4 sections feels right because I want to deform the thickness a bit upwards the Y-Axis.

Ok looks fine, ;) let’s extrude this upwards along Y-Axis, select all the points and press the extrude tool then at front view drag the extruded selection upwards. Then we extrude it again and move the point award again.

Compute the patches and again we need flipping some of the patches (red ones). Oops I missed to lay some thought of the top cap of branch, lets split a curve segement to fulfil possibility to have two 4 points patches at top. (Me thinking totally wrong…)

Select the curve segement and press INSERT key tsplit the segement in half do this for the 3 sections as viewed below and add spline between this points, then compute patches and flip the red ones.

Then add a spline at top cap to complete the branch, and there I failed.. hmm I extruded the top section selected the control points and used the tool aligned control points in both x and y axis and the I scaled , twisted it a bit , then fitted into the apple.

Lets try to make 2 leaves and attach them to the apple, to make the object more realistic. Simple I made the outline for the leafs used the auto mirror tool and joined the two objects into one, made some modifications to the leaves using the magnet tool rotate scaled and fitted into place, I also changed some pigments, see results below.

For me this object looks good, may be need some tweaking but for being my first patch object of all I’m satisfied, the modelling was just about to learn some hotkeys, basic fundamentals about patch modelling and have fun…
